The Associate in Science in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) degree is awarded to students completing the required course of study. The purpose of the program is to prepare competent entry-level paramedics in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. The program provides both the general education foundation of an Associate in Science degree and a 53-credit major course of study meeting the requirements set forth in the National EMS Education Standards in State of Florida statutes and administrative code for emergency medical technicians and paramedics. The program accomplishes this through classroom lecture, skills laboratory, clinical rotations, and field experience and internship courses. The Indian River State College EMS Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professional (CoAEMSP).

The program's participants will also receive the Emergency Medical Technology Applied Technology Diploma and the Paramedic Certificate as they complete the required courses for those programs making them eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians' (NREMT) EMT and Paramedic certification exams. Graduates passing the NREMT exams will be awarded the Nationally Registered EMT or Paramedic credential and will be eligible to apply for State of Florida certification/licensure as an EMT or paramedic.
